It turns out that I wasn't hearing things yesterday. This morning Kayelynn did a repeat performance of her da da skills. Rex was in the kitchen with us when she was "talking". However he is not impressed. "She's not talking to me" he said. This is true. She appeared to be giving one of her rattles what for "da da. Da da da!" I thought this was a wonderful achievement.
"No, that doesn't count" Rex insisted. For emphasis, Kayelynn threw her rattle on the floor and looked down at it, "da da" she said plainly. "Maybe," I said, "she is just telling her toys about you". Rex still didn't buy it. I'm still sticking with the story that her first word was da da. There isn't a law that says a baby has to be able to define their first word. Is there?
The Thing I Have Been Wondering

It has been a rough year. That is no lie. We have had one challenge after
another, and if this were a dark comedy one would recognize that it has
been fun...

that's what I want to know. both of the boys began saying da-da about 3 weeks ago. now they rattle it all the time. do i count that as their first words or not? i think they are starting to understand what it means for real now so maybe i will.
Yes ladies, unfortunatly that will be the first of many words. Sorry it wasnt ma-ma, but you will be hearing plenty of "Mooommm!" later when they want something or want to tattle on each other. For now grab that video camera and tape away while they babble da-da.
